May's topic of the month on in-sight is gelato. With sales is U.S. of more than $113 million for 2013 (Wall St. Journal) gelato along with sorbetto has really gained traction in the U.S. over the last few years.
Typically demanding a higher price than ice cream, and often utilizing more premium ingredients, gelato has managed to attract high income consumers as well as foodies and health-focused consumers (because it contains 30-50% less fat than ice cream).
Big players in the U.S. gelato market include Haagen-Daz, Ciao Bella and Talenti.
